Generating a janam kundli online is one step; understanding its labels is another. This guide explains the ascendant, rashi, nakshatra and dasha in plain language. The aim is to help you ask useful questions about a chart, without treating a single placement as a verdict on your life.

Lagna: where the chart begins

Lagna, or the ascendant, is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. It depends on both time and location. As Earth rotates, the ascendant changes through the day. An average of roughly two hours per sign is only a rough guide: rising times vary by sign and location. Near a boundary, a few minutes can matter.

The ascendant provides the starting point for counting houses. In traditional interpretation, houses relate to different areas of life. Lagna is not a complete description of your personality or future. It is one reference point, which needs the context of the other placements and the particular interpretive tradition being used.

Rashi: Moon sign versus Sun sign

In everyday Indian usage, “my rashi” often means the Moon sign: the sidereal zodiac sign occupied by the Moon at birth. A Sun sign describes the Sun’s position instead. These can be different. A general horoscope based only on a birth date is also different from a chart calculated using birth time and place.

If two websites show different signs, check whether each is displaying the Moon or Sun sign. Then compare tropical versus sidereal settings, ayanamsa and birth details. Nakshatra and pada

The sidereal zodiac is divided into 27 equal sections called nakshatras. Your Janma Nakshatra is the section occupied by the Moon at birth. Each nakshatra has four quarters, called padas. A nakshatra and a rashi are different divisions: one nakshatra can cross the boundary between two signs.

Some naming traditions use the pada to suggest a starting syllable for a child’s name. This may be a family or cultural preference, rather than an obligation. What does dasha describe?

A dasha is part of a traditional astrological timing system. In the widely used Vimshottari system, the Moon’s birth nakshatra and its position within that section determine the remaining portion of the initial period. A mahadasha is a larger period, and an antardasha is a smaller period within it. Planet names label these traditional periods.

A change of dasha does not guarantee an event. Different people experience the same named period differently. You can use the framework as a prompt for reflection on life themes. Do not delay studying, medical care or financial planning while waiting for a dasha date. A timing label cannot replace practical preparation or professional help.

North Indian and South Indian layouts

A North Indian chart usually has diamond-shaped compartments with fixed house positions. Its numbers identify signs. A South Indian chart keeps the signs in fixed positions, while an ascendant marker indicates where to begin counting houses. Changing the drawing does not change the underlying planetary positions. The formats are different ways to display the same information.

Charts made from identical birth details and settings can therefore agree even when their layouts look very different. Identify the layout first, then locate the ascendant and sign labels. Read slowly instead of comparing the visual shape alone. If you are learning with a relative, ask which format they normally use so that you can discuss the same labels.

Why birth time needs care

An incorrect time can change the ascendant and houses, or a nakshatra or pada near a boundary. Check the correct date around midnight. For an overseas birth, enter the local time and birth city, rather than your present home. Historical time zones and daylight saving changes may also need attention when checking an older record.

If the time is unknown, look for a family or hospital record. A chart based on a guess does not establish an exact birth time. Review the entered details before interpreting results, and give practical evidence and qualified advice priority for sensitive decisions.
